Surprising Highs

With so much media hype over drugs and so many regulations and laws, many people might well assume that the very idea of “getting high” is one hundred percent illegal and a thought that no law abiding citizen could or should ever consider. They might be surprised to know that this is not in fact the case, and they would probably even be more surprised to learn some of the very legal ingredients that can be used to achieve such a “high” without ever breaking the law.

Various legal, seemingly ordinary herbs and other ingredients can be combined to create a potent effect. These herbs include California Poppy, bearberry, acerola, damiana, rou gui, kola nut, yerba mate and even the old cooking favourite, plain old sage!

Aside from straightforward herbs, there are even some foods that can be consumed to achieve that legal high. Rye bread is one of those, providing it contains the fungus known as ergot, as are nutmeg that includes myristicin. Coffee, mulberries, stilton cheese (with tryptophan, a relaxant) and sarpa salpa fish (which contain numerous chemicals that are psychoactive in nature) are other ‘stimulating’ foods. Of course, in food form, a tremendous amount would have to be consumed to achieve the desired effect; concentrated herbs are generally the way to go.

There are a surprising number of ways to get high without breaking any laws and in most cases without serious health risks of the kind associated with banned drugs. So many, in fact, that it is surprising so many people choose to break the law and risk life and limb rather than go with the legal alternatives.
