History of legal highs

Natural legal highs have been in existence for hundreds of years and it is only recent developments in technology that have boosted the market with synthetic versions.

Traditionally Salvia leaves were chewed in Mexico during spiritual and healing sessions. Salvia, which is part of the sage family, is chewed or smoked and generally the effects only last a few minutes. Peasants chewed Kratom, a medicinal leaf that originates from South East Asia, while they carried out menial tasks and was also used for its medicinal properties.

Since 2005, legal highs have become more popular and in recent years the rise of synthetic legal highs has reached new levels. This has led to Headshops, such as Shiva Head Shop, springing up, which sell herbs that mimic the effects of drugs, but are legal.

Herbal highs are strictly defined as plants that occur naturally and produce these effects, for example, Salvia. They are often smoked or chewed or sometimes made into a form of tea. Modern twists on these include Noz Kandy, which are a range of inhalers packed with naturally occurring herbs and natural oils, as well as Blotter Caps.

Synthetic legal highs do not occur naturally, but have been manufactured by chemical companies. Examples of synthetic legal highs include Snow Blow and Jungle High Energy Pills, which are available from Shiva Head Shop.

Legal highs, if used responsibly, are believed to have similar effects as some illegal drugs, but with fewer side effects. Another form of legal highs, also sold by Shiva, are Ethnobotanicals. These include Blue Lotus and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose and come under the category of naturally occurring legal highs. Egyptians typically used blue Lotus, soaked in wine, as a medicine. The flower was also sometimes smoked for a sedative effect.

Cannabis seeds and the law

Cannabis seeds are available online, from a number of stockists, legally for collection or scientific research purposes only.

Legal highs supplier, Shiva Head Shop, sells a wide variety of the seeds, which have been cultivated across the world and are often supplied from internationally recognised companies.

Some of the recommended types of seeds include Dinafem Seeds, produced in Spain and DNA Genetics, a brand launched in Hollywood before production moved to Amsterdam.

The online store also sells seeds from well-known retailers that include the Dutch Green House Seed Company and KC Brains Cannabis Seeds.

The demand for auto flowering cannabis seeds has increased in the last few years and there is a great deal of competition to produce hardier and superior specimens by developing their genetic makeup. A cannabis cup is held every year in Amsterdam, where cannabis seed producers meet to share ideas on how to develop strains to make them stronger, more productive and different.

Legal Status of Legal Highs in the UK

As an alternative to the regular street drugs that are notorious in popular and casual culture, legal highs are gaining popularity with both seasoned drug users looking for new experiences, or with first time users who are looking to legal highs as a way to avoid trouble with the law. However, the legal status of legal highs is a grey area compared to the status of the regular narcotics; generally, legal highs are available because the Department of Health have yet to classify them. There are many legal highs which are simply herb based drugs that have been known to traditional medicine for a very long time – however there are also new drugs which are specifically engineered to avoid penalisation by existing laws.

For users of legal highs, it probably won’t be much of a surprise that the UK government is taking steps to legislate the new more popular drugs. This seems to be mostly aimed at the more powerful designer drugs; these are drugs that are made with the aim of imitating the effects of other drugs, but with a different chemical compound that contradicts the law. Luckily for people who frequently enjoy legal highs, there are a huge number of such compounds, and the legal ambiguity seems unlikely to affect every single possible legal high in current use. In the meantime, people can continue to invest in equipment to enjoy their legal highs, such as Lolite vaporisers or snuff bullet blizzard.

An Overview of Cannabis

Originally named ganjika, cannabis has been used by man for thousands of years.  Evidence of this use dates back as far as the third millennium BC where it was used during religious ceremonies and ancient burial rituals for its psychoactive properties.  Hemp seeds continue to be found in pharmacological cults worldwide.

The cultivation of cannabis seeds has been outlawed in most countries around the world with South Africa leading this new law in 1911.  Soon to follow were Jamaica, the UK, New Zealand and then Canada in 1923, where it continues to be criminalised.  However, a compromise was eventually made through the International Opium Convention where Indian hemp could be imported to countries for scientific or medical purposes, as long as the proper certificates accompanied these shipments.

Regardless of rules, cannabis remains a sought after herb that has been developed over the years and now comes in many forms.  Unprocessed, in its natural state it is a dried flower.  This form of cannabis is also called marijuana and refers directly to the flowers, subtending leaves and stems of the female cannabis plant.  This is the most common form of cannabis and can be used for personal medicinal purposes or, with less than 1 per cent THC, is also often used to produce industrial hemp.

When the dried cannabis plant has been processed, it suddenly becomes a much different product.  Sometimes the kief, which is a trichomes-rich powder, is sifted from the flowers and leaves of dried cannabis plants.  This powder can be used in a compressed form, or in its powdered form, and is normally added to baked products, which are a popular treat found in many parts of Europe.

Using Legal Highs in the UK

People in the UK can enjoy a wide variety of legal mind altering drugs and avoid the pitfalls of using illegal narcotic products. By using legal highs instead of the underground street drugs, users need not worry about problems with law enforcers or buying products that are not what they are claimed to be. Because of this, use of legal highs can be safer and more effective than using illegal products. There are many vendors of legal highs in and around the UK and Europe, and these stores also sell items commonly used with legal highs such as novelty ashtrays and Storz & Bickel products used for smoking.

There are legal highs to provide many different effects. For example, yohimbe is a herbal supplement ‘drug’ that can be used as an aphrodisiac and an alternative to Viagra. It has a strong history with use in traditional medicines. Yohimbe could be considered a relatively mild type of legal high (it has few obvious psychoactive effects), but many other drugs that are legally available have effects that are more than competitive with the most powerful of the commonly used illicit drugs. These are often sold as research chemicals because of the legal ambiguity of their status with regards to human use. Flying Dragons are a popular alternative to some illegal drugs that provide an energy boost. However, as legal highs are generally sold as research products, users should exercise caution to avoid overdoses.

Using Legal Highs Safely

Legal drugs that have similar effects to the well known illegal narcotics are very popular. They enable any person who can order online to find a source for psychoactive drugs that are actually completely legal. Despite their legal status, there are understandable concerns from some people and the authorities that legal highs could be dangerous. However, since many people enjoy legal highs on a regular basis, and there have been very few incidents related to this use, it can be proposed that legal highs can be used safely if they are used in the right way.

Legal highs can be powerful, so it is important to take advice concerning the dose. Since legal highs are available from legal sources, these sources are a good place to find the right dosage for the particular legal high that is going to  be used. If legal highs are going to be used socially, it is a good idea to do some research before, so as to avoid over-dose incidents when sharing the drugs. For herb based legal highs, those who are looking for a healthier way to smoke should look into purchasing relevant paraphernalia such as percolator bongs or pipes such as the ROOR pipe. These allow for enjoyment of the ‘smoke’ of the herb without inhaling the potentially harmful products of burning. Volcano Vaporiser products such as the volcano vaporiser easy valve provide a whole system for safe smoking.

Legal High Categories and Types

Just like any other drug, legal highs come in a range of different types. There are legal highs that provide increased alertness and energy, some that are more relaxing, and others that could cause hallucinations and mood changes.

Popular stimulants are used to provide energy for enjoying night life and for enhancing concentration and intensity. Sida Cordifolia is a commonly used herbal source for stimulants for legal highs. It is commonly known as Sida, and is available from a range of sources. It is known for providing both physical and mental energy boosts. Hallucinogens are drugs that are used specifically to produce hallucinations. These can provide an experience in themselves, and hallucinogenics are often also known as psychedelic drugs. Plenty of herbal legal highs are available for producing hallucinations.

Herbs for smoking are another form of legal high, and different types of herb can be bought legally. These can be used as teas and smoked using bongs or pipes. Multi-pipe bongs allow for group enjoyment of smokeable herbs.

Legal Highs in the UK

For consumers looking for a way to experience something a little more adventurous than alcohol, drug use has always been a common alternative. However, as almost everyone will be aware, the drugs most well known for their psychoactive properties are also generally illegal, with potentially strong consequences for those caught dealing, in possession, or using. This may lead some people to believe that all means of gaining a high have been covered in the same way by the law. This would be a mistake; the law only covers certain specific drugs. As such, there are many potential alternatives to the most commonly used illegal street drugs;  these have not been explicitly ‘banned’ or legislated against for human use, so possession and use are acceptable as far as the law is concerned.

Though some people are against recreational drug use for moral or health reasons, plenty of other people would like to experiment with drug use as a means to expand their experiences. With legal highs, any interested person with access to order online has the ability to obtain psychoactive compounds. Because of the legal status (or lack thereof) of known legal highs, the consumer can enjoy using their compounds. Shiva is one particularly popular source in the UK for obtaining legal highs and the associated equipment to be used with these compounds and herbs. Also, many of the paraphernalia that are legally obtained for use with illegal compounds are also applicable for use with legal highs. Glass bongs, Rizla rolling machines and Rizla rolling machine tins, and Roor pipes among other are all used by people taking legal psychoactive drugs. Finding sources and further information on legal highs is easy with a simple search.

What Legal Highs Do?

Legal highs – as the term suggests – are a perfectly lawful alternative to drugs which have been branded as illegal. Another advantage they have over the illegal variety is that because they can be bought from legitimate vendors they tend to be pure and not adulterated by harmful products. This is not usually the case with illegal substances, where dangerous ingredients are often added to further boost profits.

So what do legal highs do for the vendor?  Most legal highs are produced from herbs and herbal blends which initiate a feeling of natural euphoria and increased energy. The euphoria is quite different from that gained from alcohol, which is also legal, or marijuana, which remains illegal in the United Kingdom. This is one of the reasons why legal highs are so popular at raves and parties.

The feeling one gets from the products depends on what is taken. Different herbs and herbal extracts produce different responses. The big difference with many illegal drugs is that the legal highs tend to be made out of completely natural products. However, some should be avoided at all costs. These include party pills containing such substances as TMFPP and BZP, which are especially dangerous when taken with alcoholic drinks.

When using legal highs it is always advisable to take them safely. A good example of this is those herbal products which can be smoked. While they can be smoked in roll-up form by using a Rizla rolling machine, the fact is that the smoke, as with tobacco products, can be hazardous to health. A safer alternative is to use a vaporizer such as a Volcano vaporizer solid valve or Volcano vaporizer easy valve. Used in conjunction with Volcano vaporizer bags, these enable the fumes to be inhaled, giving the user a safer legal high.

Purchasing Safe Legal Highs

Not only do people want their highs to be legal, they also want them to be safe. The last thing they need is for their legal highs to be adulterated with potentially dangerous ingredients. This is why it is always very important to check the ingredients before purchasing. If the goods are being bought online, this means carefully checking the information available on the vendor’s website, and then checking the details on the packet when they arrive.

Legal highs come in various forms, such as party pills or herbal ecstasy. While it is legal to have possession of them, it is equally important that they are not injurious to health.

The big attraction about legal highs is they are not only safe to use, but are also safe as an alternative to drugs classed as illegal here in the United Kingdom. In order for them to be safe to take, the legal highs should not contain any ingredients that threaten the health of the user. These hazardous ingredients include BZP and Mephedrone.

Arguably one of the best ways to ensure the legal highs are safe to take, is to buy them in seed form. For instance cannabis seeds can be purchased. These seeds come in various forms, regularised and feminised. However, anyone purchasing them should be aware of the legal situation here in the UK. While it is perfectly legal to buy them as collector’s items, they cannot be legally cultivated.
